How to Tell If You Need a New Furnace

technician-working-on-furnace

Is it time to install a new furnace in your home? You may be wondering how to tell when it’s time to think about installing a new furnace. The good news is, there are usually signs ahead of a furnace completely breaking down.

When you pay attention to these signs, you can stay ahead of furnace repair needs, and even install a new system before your current one stops working. If you’re thinking about furnace installation in Roseburg, our team can help. In the meantime, you can keep reading to learn more about the five signs that it’s time to consider a new furnace.

1. Furnace Age

Once your furnace reaches about 15 years old, it’s time to think about a new one. Sure, you could get five or 10 more years of life out of it, but once it reaches 15 years, there’s a greater chance that you’ll need a replacement soon. At 15 years, it’s time to begin paying closer attention to unusual sounds, smells, and other problems.

2. Repair Bills

Experts say that your furnace will experience the most repairs two years before it goes out completely. If you notice an increased need to give us a call for furnace repairs, that’s a sign that it will be time to replace your furnace soon. If any one repair expense costs more than 50% of the cost of a new heater, you should probably invest in a new heater instead of an expensive repair bill. Keep in mind that if you make multiple repairs over a short period of time, you may also want to add those up to reach that 50% number and stop investing in more repairs.

3. Energy Bills

If you notice your energy bills increasing steeply, your furnace may be to blame. Sure, energy costs can fluctuate from month to month, but they should never go up steadily over time without ceasing or increase excessively in a single month without reason.

Sometimes heater maintenance can help you get back some of your furnace’s efficiency and lower your energy costs. If that doesn’t work, it may be time for a newer, more efficient unit. You know installation can be expensive, but the amount that you save on your energy bills may help even out the expense over the life of the unit.

Lack of Heat

This may seem obvious, but if your home is not getting warm enough, then it may be time to replace your furnace. It’s easy to write this off as a minor inconvenience if your home still feels reasonably comfortable. But if your heater is not specifically getting your home warm when you want it to, you may be wasting money on your energy use.

Excessive Dust

You may not relate excessive dust in your home to your furnace, but there is definitely a correlation between the two. If your home is much dustier than usual, your furnace may be to blame. You can replace the air filter and see if that helps, but if it doesn’t, then you may have holes in your ductwork or gaps in the system that is allowing us to get in, and then blow throughout your home.
