Tips to Protect Your Pets Around an HVAC System

If you have pets, it is important to protect them from your HVAC system. Animals can be very curious, and your HVAC system is not something you want them to investigate. There’s a potential that your pets could get hurt, but they could also damage your HVAC system in the process.

This could result in expensive vet bills, as well as costs for heating and air conditioner repair in Salem. You can keep reading to learn more about the ways to keep your pets away from your HVAC system to protect them, as well as your home, from any dangerous problems. When you’re ready, you can give our team a call to schedule service for your HVAC system, whether you need maintenance, repairs or even just want our help to pet-proof, your HVAC system.

Protect Your HVAC Unit

Unless you have a ductless system, you have both a large indoor unit and a large outdoor unit. Both need barriers that help protect your pets from getting too close. Your indoor system is usually located inside a closet. Be sure to keep this door closed and secure so that pets cannot get inside.

Your outdoor unit is largely exposed. It is designed to withstand weather and changing temperatures. Pets are another story. It’s possible that your pets can accidentally damage your outdoor HVAC system out of sheer curiosity. When you consider the fact that there may also be rodents and small animals outside in addition to your pets, the outdoor unit really needs some type of barrier.

Putting up a small fence around the perimeter of your outdoor system will protect it from your pets and other animals. Keep in mind that the barrier should not be too close to your HVAC unit or it can block airflow. You even have the option of a breathable cover that protects the unit while maintaining good airflow. These covers are easily removable so that they can be cleaned. Our team can help you select a solution that protects your HVAC unit without causing any additional problems.

Ductless HVAC systems are located along the ceilings of each room in your home. Most pets cannot reach these, but if you have taller furniture near the ductless units, cats may be able to jump up high and reach them. Be sure to keep tall furniture placed away from any ductless units in your home. This is equally important for maximizing airflow.

Monitor Air Vents and Air Intake

Be sure to keep the cover where your air filter is located closed and secure. You don’t want curious pets to be able to get inside and potentially get trapped or hurt. You also want to monitor air vents that are located on the floors of your home.

Pets can easily reach these air vents and may even enjoy laying on them for extra heat or cooling. Check the air vents periodically for any signs of hazards that could hurt your pets. Examples include loose screws or covers that are bent, damaged, or rusting. Address any problems right away so that your pets don’t get hurt accidentally.
