Uh Oh! Why Won’t My Mini Split Switch to Heating Mode?

If you’ve tried switching your thermostat over from cooling to heating and it hasn’t worked, you need to call for service. Just like a central heat pump, your ductless mini split has a valve that allows it to reverse the direction of refrigerant flow. But sometimes that valve can get stuck or other problems can impact operation.

It can be worrisome when your mini split is not working in heat mode and Eugene, but usually there is a fairly easy fix. We may have to repair or replace the reversing valve on your mini split to get it working again. You can keep reading to learn more about why your mini split won’t switch modes and how to prevent the problem from happening again.

Stuck Reversing Valve

Perhaps the most common reason for a mini split not switching modes is the reversing valve malfunctioning. Each of your individual mini split units has a reversing valve, so it’s possible for a single unit to not work while the others are still operational. If a single mini split doesn’t work for heating when it has worked just fine for cooling, the reversing valve is a likely to be the culprit.

Sometimes the solution is as simple as cleaning out around the reversing valve. It’s easy for dust buildup to happen quickly in a mini split and negatively impact a variety of functions. But sometimes we have to replace the reversing valve completely. This is more common in mini splits that are already up in age.

Thermostat Issues

Each of your individual mini splits also has its own thermostat control since each unit works independently from others around your home. It’s possible that the thermostat is reading the indoor air temperature incorrectly or failing to communicate with the other components inside the unit.

If the thermostat doesn’t measure the temperature accurately, it may not signal for the mini split to turn on for heating. If the thermostat doesn’t have clear communication with your mini split, the signal may be getting lost and not translating correctly.

In either case, we can recalibrate the thermostat and ensure that all of the connections are working together the way they were meant to. We can also test the temperature reading once our reset is complete to ensure that the steps worked.

Prioritizing Maintenance

Once you address an issue with your mini split being stuck in one mode or the other, you want to prevent the problem from happening again in the near future. Professional maintenance is the best way to do that. Twice each year we can visit your home to clean out the inside of each system and make sure all of the connections and calibration is correct.

Staying ahead of problems can prevent your mini split from stopping working completely. Plus, we can identify other issues that might be silently festering inside of the system. Proactivity is the best way to keep each mini split working at its best without any issues both now and in the future.
