Air Conditioning Services to Help Lower Your Cooling Costs

Monday, June 25th, 2018

money-saving-piggy-bankIf you cringe at the thought of looking at your electrical bills during the summer, this post is for you. Running the AC during the hot months places an enormous demand on the electrical system. The air conditioner’s compressor motor is extremely powerful (it has to turn liquid refrigerant into gas, after all) and it creates a noticeable spike in electrical costs when it runs. There’s no way to avoid running the compressor if you want cooling from the AC—but you can find ways to run the compressor less often.

There are many simple steps you can take to reduce AC use: close blinds during the day, run the fan only, keep the thermostat around 78°F, reduce the use of larger appliances during peak heat. But in this post, we’re looking specifically at AC services our professionals provide that can make a big difference in summer cooling costs.

It’s Already Time for an Air Conditioning Tune-Up

Monday, March 19th, 2018

schedule-service-reminderThis is the first official week of spring. That doesn’t mean the weather in Oregon instantly warms up, as anybody who’s lived here for even a year knows. We’ll still experience heavy rains and cool days. But summer is not far off, and the arrival of spring is an important reminder to have your home prepared for the hot weather. That means it’s time to arrange for a tune-up for your home’s central air conditioning system.

Is This Really Necessary Each Year?

No, it’s not necessary. Your air conditioner may continue to work through the summer without having this professional service. But it’s strongly recommended by HVAC contractors and HVAC manufacturers, as well as the U.S. Department of Energy. If you want to receive the best performance and service life from your air conditioner, make sure it receives professional maintenance each spring.

Problems You Might Have with an Electric Furnace

Monday, January 8th, 2018

stripping-electric-wiresNot all homes have access to a natural gas pipeline to provide power to heating systems, stoves, ovens, and laundry machines. When it comes to providing winter warmth for these houses, there are a number of options available. The electric furnace is one of the most common. Electric furnaces are reliable, require fewer repairs than natural gas systems, and can last for many years.

But even with excellent regular maintenance, an electric furnace may run into repair issues at some time in its service life. Below we’ve listed a few of the more common. Keep a watch for inferior furnace performance so you’ll know it’s time to contact a licensed professional for furnace repair.

Have You Had Heating Maintenance Yet?

Monday, November 13th, 2017

furnace-repair-technicianThe rainy, colder weather is here in Oregon, and we can expect it to stay through to spring. Of course, this is how it always is, and you expect the heating system in your house to work during the season keeping you and your family cozy.

But you can’t take your heater for granted! No matter if it’s a furnace, a heat pump, an in-floor radiant system, or a ductless mini split, it must have professional attention on a regular basis to ensure that it’s inspected and tuned-up. How regularly? Your heater must have maintenance every year.

The best time to have it scheduled is in the early fall so you beat out the cold weather. But it’s definitely not too late in the season to arrange for it! We offer Energy Savings Agreements which provide you with the routine maintenance your heater need. (The agreements also cover maintenance in the spring for your AC.)

How Duct Sealing Can Save You Money

Wednesday, March 25th, 2015

Ductwork is one of the most important, and most neglected, parts of you HVAC system. You home’s ducts are responsible for making centralized forced air heating and cooling possible in the first place. Despite their importance, however, ducts are often completely ignored when it comes to required maintenance. This is unfortunate, as keeping your ducts in good condition can actually save you quite a bit of money on your heating and electric bills. Want to know how? Read on to find out.

Common Duct Issues

Ducts have a couple of different issues with which they’re commonly afflicted. Dust, debris, moisture, and rust are all issues that affect the quality of your ducts. The biggest issue by far, however, is duct leaks. Ducts are actually quite vulnerable to leaks, despite their relatively passive role in heating and air conditioning. Improper installation often leaves gaps between the different sections of ductwork. Moisture or animal activity can create small holes through which air can escape. Even expanding and contracting from regular use can result in sections of the ductwork working themselves loose.

So, what’s the big deal? A few small leaks here and there hardly constitute an emergency, right? Actually, the US Department of Energy has estimated that the average forced air system loses as much as 30% of its output to duct leaks. That’s almost a third of your heating and air conditioning output that you’re still paying for, but which is lost before it ever reaches its destination. That loss forces your systems to stay on longer to accomplish the same temperatures, which contributes to a significant rise in your heating and electric bills.

How Duct Sealing can Help

Duct sealing is the process of finding and closing any leaks that may be present in your ductwork. By having an experienced professional seal your ducts for you, you’re drastically improving the efficiency of your heater and air conditioner. This is how you can substantially lower your heating and electric bills. If you haven’t had your ducts sealed in the past year or two, call Comfort Flow Heating. We provide duct sealing services throughout Salem, OR.
